Folders Don't Equal Compliance

How we made a business safer

Last year, we took over Health and Safety works at a Golf Club. But before that point, things were a little less than compliant due to how they had been asked to manage their H&S Practices.

At our initial consultation with them, we learned that they were working with two folders provided by their incumbent Health and Safety supplier; these contained ‘everything they needed’ to work safely and in line with regulations. However, without a dedicated in-house person to work through these folders, compliance was never going to be achieved.

The reality is, that unless someone is responsible for working through what is contained in those folders, an organisation will neither be compliant or actively safe, meaning they are at risk of failing audits but, more importantly – costly accidents.

In our experience, unfortunately, this practice is quite common.

How we made them Safer.

To bring their Health and Safety practices to life, we committed to one day per month. Not just in time, but in presence, to ensure that risk assessments were carried out, policies were written, and safe practices were implemented around both their day to day activities and the constantly evolving workspace.

This means we provided a living, breathing safety professional for one day per month to work at the club to act as their face to face in house consultant rather than a set of folders and a voice on the end of a phone.

At an organisation like a golf club, management must ensure the safety of teams of staff (and many different types at that) as well as patrons. From kitchen and gardening equipment, to safe movement around the club house and course, there’s lots to consider. Each month, while present, we review the club, check for new risks and write new policies in line with updated processes, equipment and services.

This helps the club to keep on top of changes and ongoing safety. Our active attendance also ensures their staff can connect with the process, in a way that they simply can’t with an annually delivered set of folders.

Staff engagement will always benefit an organisation, as with the presence of a Health and Safety professional and worker co-operation, hazards which would be missed without that physical face to face interaction, are spotted. This truly alters workplace safety culture for the better.
