Alternatives to Bitrex for Face Fit

We recently had a booking for Face Fit, but we were informed that one operative couldn’t taste bitter and that changed how we approached the Face Fit test for that individual.

Why does bitter matter in Face Fit?

For those who don’t understand, part of the Face Fit Testing process involves us spraying a bitter but harmless solution called Bitrex inside the hood that the operative will be wearing. If the participant can taste the substance when wearing the mask, we know that mask is neither adequate n’or suitable and that it will have to be further adjusted. So, if someone can’t taste bitter, we have a problem.

Alternatives to Bitrex

If for any reason you are unable to use the bitter Bitrex solution, you will be able to use a sweet alternative which can be purchased online by searching ‘Bitrex Sweet Solution’. This can be used in the same way but it is advised that if the operative can taste bitter, Bitrex should be your first choice as it is more effective.

The Rest of Our Story…

On the day of the test we mentioned, we attended the site armed with both options. Curious, we decided to try Bitrex first and after 14 sprays he could taste the substance. Both he and his manager were curious as to why he could taste it this time and we have some suggestions:

1. He may have eaten, drunk or smoked prior to the test therefore masking his taste in the first test
2. The person conducting the test was not following guidelines correctly and therefore not spraying the substance into the hood correctly.

Management organising, and individuals partaking in, Face Fit testing, need to ensure they use a fit2fit registered person to conduct the process, that will ensure they receive a high quality service every time.
