Michael McCarthy

Founder and Director

I worked in the Health and Safety sector for over ten years as an internal advisor for a blue chip company. Following that, I moved to a smaller organisation to act as a Safety Consultant and Trainer, supporting large and small clients alike. During these times, I worked with professionals delivering fantastic services making a positive difference to peoples working lives.
Our business was then formed with a view to offering a truly bespoke and personal service to clients. Naturally, we are really proud of the work we do. We genuinely believe we are helping our clients stay truly safe by going that extra mile when needed.

Karen McCarthy

Operations Director

I have a long background in the NHS, and worked in senior roles in a variety of departments which included Pharmacy. I managed a Cytotoxic Preparation Unit at a hospital. During that time, I worked hard to help my staff understand the fundamental reason we produced cancer drugs.

The patient.

A lot of the substances we handled were quite harmful, this inspired me to become the Health and Safety representative for my department. My desire was to make our processes as safe as possible. This eventually led to me working full time in the Health and Safety department of a large hospital trust in Sussex. In that role, I gained invaluable experience in multiple disciplines.

I also worked in Occupational Health as part of management team providing services as well as support for NHS staff.

When forming the business, I wanted to ensure each and every client received the very best service from us. Additionally, that our service was geared towards compliance and a level-headed approach to the challenges each business faces.

Having the freedom to work with a large variety of clients helping them implement varied processes is incredibly rewarding. Of course, I look forward to every challenge that comes our way.

Consultant

After working in the Education Sector for many years I gained my Health and Safety qualifications and took a career change. I have now been working as a Health and Safety consultant and trainer for the past 7 Years.

As a result of my work with large organisations and small businesses, I have the ability to scale my advice. That helps when managing client budgets and resources available.

One of my passions is teaching. Using my experiences, I’m able to ensure every session I deliver is educational, inclusive as well as interesting.

My other passion is the RAF. I completed 26 years as an officer in the Royal Air Force Reserves. On weekends I can often be found assisting a friend to restore a Sea Harrier which served in the Falklands conflict. Our business was then formed with a view to offering a truly bespoke and personal service to clients. Naturally, we are really proud of the work we do. We genuinely believe we are helping our clients stay truly safe by going that extra mile when needed.

Pip

Operations Manager

I work with Safer Health and Safety as their Operational Manager. I demonstrate strong communication skills through the overseeing of the day to day running of the office environment. My role broadens to the coordination of training as well as stock delivery services for external companies. With proven experience in leading corporate TMC’s, my expertise lie within the Health and Safety and travel industries.

Having worked in the travel industry for the majority of my career, it was a huge shock being made redundant at the start of lockdown. As great friends of mine, Karen and Michael knew my employment situation and we decided, to help us both in a busy and difficult time, I would begin a new position with Safer. Although I was definitely thrown in the deep end, having never worked within the Health and Safety Industry previously, I quickly realised the skills were transferable. Working in a small team has been refreshing, I enjoy the human touch which gets lost in large companies. Safer is flexible, ethical and we are given the dedicated time to make us all feel safe.

I have learnt a lot within the Health and Safety industry in the past few months, nevertheless I still have a lot to learn. However, I know I am supported by a team with years of experience, and most importantly, we all have the passion to deliver, it’s not just a job!

Finance Manager

With expertise in credit control management, my current role as Finance Manager within Safer Health and Safety allows me to deliver strong customer facing communication, support colleagues and run finance accounts effectively and efficiently.

I started my career as a sales executive for Fiat/Lancia and enjoyed the thrill of being one of the first women selling cars. I later joined Abbey National, dealing with clients and figures, before moving into property management, where I liaised with contractors and managed client portfolios.

In 2010, I enrolled to study for a qualification in Accounting, and three years later became AAT Qualified. I took on a new position as Sales Receivable Executive in a business travel company – 12 years later I was managing all of the credit control and accounts receivable.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought great disruption to the travel industry and unfortunately the branch closed with staff made redundant. Through a friend of a friend, I was asked to help out temporarily with some finance and expenses, working for the husband-and-wife business, Safer who specialise in RPE and Health and Safety training. Safer were rushed off their feet supplying NHS surgeries with much-needed equipment and support, and I was keen to help.

With the expertise and guidance of my new colleagues, I am enjoying the challenges and opportunities that this business provides. I am thrilled and privileged to work with the team at this fast-growing company to help make individuals and companies Safer. I have adapted to the new role, swiftly learning to use Quickbooks, which demonstrates my personal qualities of commitment, dedication and the ambition to succeed.
